Govt museum to get 5 cr tech upgrade
The government museum in Egmore is set to get huge technological boost as the government is planning to introduce advanced facilities like augmented reality and virtual reality-based video shows.

According to officials in the Department of Museums, the government has allotted more than Rs 5 crore for technological and security upgradation in Chennai government museum. Several new projects have been sanctioned to increase the number of footfalls in the museums, said officials.
“Important among the projects is a video show based on advanced technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality and touch based technology solutions. These shows will offer real time experience and will help the department showcase minute details about the artefacts,” said an official.
Authorities also said that the department is planning to setup a video wall to display the artefacts through videos. The videos would be created with special effects to show the history of the artefacts with audio effects for the visitors. Rs 1 crore had been allotted for setting up the video wall and to create videos with special effects.
The department is also planning to setup another stone idol park inside the museum and to refurbish the existing two idol parks. The new idol park will be setup along the lines of the traditional buildings located inside the museum and Rs 70 lakh had been allotted for setting up the new idol park.
To enhance the security of the government museum, a new set of advanced CCTV cameras with Local Area Network (LAN) facility would be setup in the museum and Rs 2.5 crore had been allotted for the purpose.
Ongoing projects in the museum
Officials further said that the government has sanctioned Rs 11.7 crore for the upgradation of museum under and works such as provision of underground ducts for cables and storm water to reinstate the visual integrity of the site, construction of visitor’s plaza at the entrance are under way.
Increase in footfall
- On 2017-18, there were 5.82 lakh visitors but in 2018-19, the footfalls increased to 6.5 lakh
- The revenue too showed an increase as in 2017-18, the total revenue was Rs 88.99 lakh but in 2018-19, the revenue was Rs 98.01 lakh resulting in an increase by 10.14 per cent
