Corporates asked to restore city waterbodies

In a move to tap CSR (corporate social responsibility) funds to restore water bodies in the city, the Greater Chennai Corporation, on Tuesday, held a meeting with corporate firms.

In the meeting organised in Ripon Building premises, around 50 corporate firms, including automobile manufacturers, IT firms, private banks and oil companies, participated.


“Private firms have to come forward to take up restoration of the water bodies in Chennai and maintain them. Also, the firms should take up solid waste management works, construction of rainwater harvesting structures under CSR scheme funds,” Corporation Commissioner G Prakash requested.


Detailed project report (DPR) for 90 water bodies have been prepared and the corporate representatives were asked to take up the restoration of these water bodies under CSR fund. The civic body has already handed over 48 water bodies.


The civic body has taken up 210 water bodies to be restored under the capital fund, Chennai Smart City Fund and CSR funds. Of the 210 waterbodies, works on 52 are ongoing at a cost of Rs 18.20 crore and eco-restoration of Villivakkam lake has been taken up at Rs 16 Crore.
