The man was identified as Venkat Raman from Perumal Temple Street in Old Pallavaram, an electrician. Police said Venkat Raman and Karthiga (24) (name changed), who hail from the same locality, were friends who knew each other from childhood. She is currently working at a private school as a teacher.
Recently, Venkat proposed to her, which she turned down. Not giving up on his efforts, he began following Karthiga constantly, asking her to accept his proposal. Finally, she stopped even talking to him.
On Tuesday, he waited for Karthiga outside her school. When she came out at around 6.30 pm, Karthiga walked past Venkat without talking to him. He intercepted her and insisted on talking to her. When Karthiga remained indifferent, he mentioned some of the stalking cases in the city that turned violent to threaten her.
After hearing these comments, Karthiga began to walk faster avoiding him. Furious over this, Venkat grabbed her hand and attacked her. On hearing her cries, the public rescued Karthiga. They also nabbed and thrashed Venkat before handing him over to the Pallavaram police, who have filed a case of woman harassment against Venkat and arrested him.
