Adithyaa Vasudevan from West Mambalam, was employed as Third officer for the last four years at Steno Impero, a UK-flagged oil tanker owned by Sweden-based Steno Bulk.
One more person detained has been identified as Silambarasan of Puducherry, while 16 others are from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The Stena Impero was captured on July 19 by Iran and is moored off the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. While there was no communication from Adithyaa, captors allowed him to call his parents July 23 onwards. “He calls every morning using a satellite phone. He says they are being treated well and they haven’t been harmed,” his father Vasudevan, a retired AAI official, said.
While Steno Bulk is in touch with the crew’s families, Vasudevan was aggrieved over no response from the Ministry of External Affairs. “I sent three mails to them but to no avail. I mailed the PMO too but they said they don’t deal with such issues,” he said.
