According to police, Balamurugan (27), a native of Villupuram and a resident of Thazhangkuppam near Ennore, was employed by a man who had taken up contracts for Greater Chennai Corporation projects.
When Balamurugan, who was engaged in repair work of passengers’ shelter at a bus stop, was walking to the work site, two persons intercepted him. The duo, later identified as Clinton (25) and Dinesh (26), also residents of Thazhangkuppam, bundled Balamurugan into a car and threatened him.
Clinton and Dinesh then made him to call his employer and demanded Rs 1 lakh as ransom. They told the contractor that they would not release Balamurugan from their custody unless their demand was met, and took the man to Athipattu. After parking the car on the roadside, they called the contractor again.
Even as Balamurugan was trying to convince the two saying that he did not have a good relationship with his employer, he spotted a police patrol vehicle travelling on the road. He then raised an alarm attracting the attention of the personnel. Sensing trouble, Clinton and Dinesh tried to escape from the spot, but police caught them before they could get away. The duo was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
