Selaiyur post office with no shelter irks visitors and senior citizens
Parked vehicles at Selaiyur post office in Mahalakshmi Nagar on Tambaram-Velachery Main Road takes up most of the space, making it difficult for the public to utilise the facility. The vehicles are parked at the entrance, which narrows the path, causing grief and discomfort to the public.

The post office, which has been functioning for nearly a decade, caters to residents of Tambaram Ganesh Nagar, Madambakkam, Sembakkam and Chitlapakkam. The public claimed that there is no space to queue up inside the facility and visitors have to wait on the road. Adding to their woes, there is only open counter and it facesthe road.
Visitors at the post office added that the vehicles are parked on the main road near its entrance. As there is no separate parking space, it leads to a traffic jam on the street. Senior citizens, who use the facility often, complained that there are no seats or proper shelter to rest.
“Several elderly persons visit the post office to avail special postal schemes for them. But they do not have proper seating arrangements or shelter,” said P Vishwanathan, a social activist from Chitlapakkam.
Despite several complaints from the public to shift the post office to another locality, there has been no action in this regard. The public feels that the post office will be more beneficial if a new building was constructed with the help of the municipality.
When contacted, Tambaram Postal Division Senior Superintendent Sundari said, “We are searching for a new space and most of the owners are not ready to give their commercial spaces for government offices as the rent will be low. But we are planning to get a place at a prominent area to set up the post office so that more people willbe benefitted.”
