TN wins 9 gold medals at World Police and Fire Games in China

A team of nine policemen who represented Tamil Nadu at the 18th World Police and Fire Games at Chengdu in China has bagged 35 medals, including nine gold medals. The 11-day meet culminated on Sunday.

While sub-inspector Francis Mary led the medal tally by winning four gold medals including one in high-jump, she secured two silver and two bronze medals in other competition she took part in. Grade I constable Krishna Rekha came second by winning two gold and two silver medals.


Special sub-inspector Krishnamoorhty won gold in 5km race walk, Grade I constable Pramila won gold in the long jump and also set a new meet record. Pramila also won five silver medals in other running competitions. Constable Uma Maheshwari also won a gold medal at long jump and a silver medal at 100m sprint and three bronze medals in other competitions. While Grade I constable Tamilarasi won four silver medals and a bronze medal, constable Athistam won a silver medal. Constable Thanga Vasanth won silver in Polevault and head constable Bala Kumarasamy also secured a silver medal. K Athistam, a constable, won silver in long jump. The team is expected to meet the DGP.


The World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) — one of the largest sports meet in the world — is a biennial athletic event which is open to active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the world. In 2019, more than 5,000 sportspersons from 97 countries participated in 237 different games in the meet. From India, 65 police and fire personnel participated in the games, while nine police personnel from Tamil Nadu were selected for the games based on their performances in various sports events.
