City Corporation signs MoU with European Union

The Greater Chennai Corporation had signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Union to take part in International Urban Cooperation (IUC) programme on Wednesday.

As per the MoU, Chennai will cooperate with the French city, Claremont-Ferrand.Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash signed the MoU in the presence of Henriette Faergemann, Counsellor of EU delegation to India. There are as many as 28 countries in the International Urban Cooperation Programme, and Chennai has become the third Indian city after Mumbai and Pune to join the programme.


According to a senior official of the Chennai Corporation, the MoU would help the city to exchange projects, experiences and technologies with Claremont-Ferrand. They would also partner with the French city to develop a local action plan.“Elected councillors and engineers of both cities can visit each other to share knowledge. We will also align our Smart City projects with international best practices, which would be beneficial for Chennai,” he said. Meanwhile, the delegation of EU assured the Chennai Corporation that they would provide funds for the city’s developmental projects.“EU, in association with all its member countries, has decided to create a bank. We have requested the representatives to fund some of our projects and they have agreed. We are expecting EU funds to redesign city roads as per the non-motorised transport policy,” the official added.
