Good Samaritan’s wife becomes victim of snatching
S Thanigaivel of Ayanavaram was among the three autorickshaw drivers who were rewarded by city police commissioner AK Viswanathan in November last year for returning valuables forgotten in his autorickshaw. But little did he expect that his wife Sharmila would become a victim of snatching on Monday night.

The incident occurred on Monday while Sharmila was walking to a shop. Two people in an autorickshaw snatched her bag. However, passers-by secured one of the suspects after Sharmila raised an alarm. The suspect was identified as Archana (24) and based on her inputs, her accomplice, auto driver Prabu (32), was nabbed.
Investigation revealed that Archana was the main accused and that she had been caught for similar offences in Pulianthope and Flower Bazaar. But she was let off with a warning.
Explaining her modus operandi, a police officer said that Archana of Vyasarpadi befriends random auto drivers after boarding the vehicle and influences them to indulge in snatching.
On Monday, she befriended Prabu after boarding his auto and asked him to go close to Sharmila. She got down from the auto and snatched Sharmila’s handbag. Both Prabu and Archana were remanded.
