While attributing the huge collection to the tax hike, a Chennai Corporation official said that tax collection has been intensified to attain the target of Rs 700 crore. “As we are going to impose a penalty against defaulters and give incentives to residents paying tax on time from the next half year, tax collection would be easy from then,” he added.
According to the official, they have collected Rs 445 crore as on August 28. During the same period in 2018, the civic body had collected Rs 257 crore only. It may be noted that the civic body had crossed Rs 1,000 crore property tax collection for the first time in the 2018-19 financial year. “We have a target of Rs 1,300 crore this year and we are taking steps to reach the target,” he added.
