Railway vigilance officers conducted a search at Chennai-bound the Bangalore Mail in Katpadi. They found S Kalairaj travelling using the VVIP pass given to his father N Selvaraj, who was elected as DMK MP from Tiruchy in 1980. Selvaraj, who has also been a State minister, joined AIADMK in 2016. While he died in March this year, only his wife can use the VVIP pass to travel in the first-class AC coach in trains.

As Kalairaj was found to have misused the VVIP pass, he was handed over to the Government Railway Police. While he was booked under two different sections, he was released on own bail.
