While West Tambaram is known as a commercial hub which also has the head post office, municipality office and a market, East Tambaram houses educational institutions and residential areas. Due to this, lakhs of people travel between East and West Tambaram using the subway every day.
In 2006, the Railways constructed a subway linking East and West Tambaram. The subway was specially designed for light vehicles connecting the MES Road in East Tambaram and GST Road in WestTambaram.
Locals said that for the last one year, it has been very difficult for commuters to drive on the subway as the road is bumpy and full of potholes. Using the subway at night has become scary as there are no proper lights. They added that the motorists who are new to the locality would get skid and get injured due to the lack of lighting in the subway.
The Railway authorities claim that it should be maintained by the municipality or National Highway department. When asked the NH officials, they said that maintenance should be done by municipality.
R Ramanathan from Tambaram said, "We have been requesting the municipality and the Railways for the past one year to repair the subway but there is no proper response from them."
When contacted the Tambaram municipal engineer Karupaiyah Raja said, "As the subway is an important link in the locality, we have decided to take up the work and finish it using some of our special schemes. The work would bestarted soon."
