Overflowing garbage bins a worry for Mogappair West residents

Although the Eri Scheme locality in Mogappair West in the city can boast of tree cover on either sides of the road, residents can’t help but keep their windows closed and passers-by cover their noses in order to avoid the stench from the garbage overflowing from bins on to the streets. This is due to the inaction of sanitary workers who neglect to clear the roads off waste, claim residents.

With waste dumped in residential areas said to make people cover their noses while crossing the garbage bins as the stench emanating from them engulfs the whole area, Parvathi, a resident, said, “The sight of the road evokes an awful feeling, with the dustbin overflowing, and people in the neighbourhood don’t seem to have a solution for it. The waste spreads all over the road and is a concern among residents. Apart from problems in disposal, the risk involved to one’s health is also aplenty.”

“The situation becomes worse during rainy days as disease-carrying agents abound. Just keeping a bin to dump garbage into is not enough until it is cleared on time. Besides emitting stench throughout the day, the bin offers a feast to animals. Sanitary workers are also not bothered in clearing the waste on the road. Even if we ask them to clean it up, they ignore our remarks and walk away,” said Vijaykumar who runs a shop in the locality.

Although the road has tree cover on both sides, people living with garbage bins placed at close proximity are said to have no option but to keep doors and windows closed to avoid the stench. The garbage bin also is a big turn-off due to it attracting insects. It has taken the serenity off the locality’s green cover, complain residents.

When contacted, Ravichandran, conservancy supervisor, Chennai Corporation said, “We keep monitoring the area and make sure we clear the garbage daily. We will take immediate steps.”
