NE monsoon: Corpn special team to prevent flooding in subways

The Greater Chennai Corporation has constituted a special team to monitor and prevent inundation in subways during the northeast monsoon.

According to a Chennai Corporation official, the team would be headed by the chief engineer (Bridges department). “Apart from forming a team, the civic body has also decided to deploy additional motor pumps to remove water from the subways. As of now, each subway has been equipped with a motor pump and an additional pump as standby. During this monsoon, all the subways will have three motor pumps,” the official said.


The Chennai Corporation is maintaining as many as 16 railway subways and 6 pedestrian subways across the city.


The civic body had identified around 105 spots vulnerable to flooding in the city and conducted a monsoon preparedness meeting with 15 service departments including Metrowater, CMRL, Highways, Railways and Public Works Department. Officials of the service departments have been asked to rectify the shortcomings at the identified vulnerable spots. Similarly, several tenders have been floated to desilt storm water drains across the city before the onset of monsoon.


Meanwhile, the Public Works Department has issued a circular directing its engineers to take precautionary and preventive measures at the government buildings, maintained by the department, functioning in the city. As per the circular, the engineers should carry out upgradation works wherever necessary and submit action taken report before the end of this month.
