Visual art is evolving and embracing new trends and digital experiments. One such visual art form that’s gaining popularity among artists and art lovers is resin geode art. So, what is a geode? They are hollow, vaguely circular rocks, in which masses of mineral matter (which may include crystals) are secluded. Inspired by the natural geodes, city-based artist Affshana Mahamutha started creating artificial geodes with resins, deco stones and crystals.
“After finishing my interior designing course, I wanted to pursue art. That’s when I came across resin art. With resin, you can create works of art that fascinate with their clarity and brilliance. This type of art is slowly getting popularity among artists across the country. Also, I was interested in abstract art than a definite form of art. Abstract art is something that has no form or shape. After seeing the natural geodes, I thought of creating artificial geodes with resins that look similar to the real ones,” says Affshana.
Resin geode art is made using an organic polymer compound called epoxy resin. “I sourced epoxy resin from outside the country. Basically, geode art is decorating resin art with materials like stones and crystals. The resin is mixed with different colours and then using the pouring technique of abstract art, you can create different patterns and designs. After that, embellish the art with crystals, stones and so on,” says the 23-year-old artist, who organises art workshops and masterclasses in Chennai and other cities across India.
There is no limit to a person’s imagination and you can clearly understand it from Affshana’s intricate, colourful works. “I love to experiment with colours, textures and patterns. Since it’s an abstract art form, there are no specific rules. This gives an artist more freedom to explore,” the young artist muses. With an aim to supply affordable art materials for the beginners, she also started an art brand called Artstop. “When I started off, I found it very tough to source affordable art supplies in the country. I had to source it from outside India and most of them were expensive. That’s how I decided to start my own venture where I can provide materials like resins, hardeners, crystals, stones, pouring liquid and more. All the materials are non-toxic and don’t harm our skin,” the artist points out. She also does sculpting with clay paste as the medium.
