Police identified the victim as Bharat (20) from Kotturpuram, a food delivery agent, who was having a tea while waiting near a restaurant to pick an order. The car driver was identified as K Surya (24) of Valasaravakkam, a businessman.
At 1.15 am, as Bharat was having tea from a cycle vendor outside the restaurant, a car which was speeding from Anna flyover towards Chetpet took a right turn on Valluvar Kottam High Road. The driver lost control and knocked down Bharat who was sitting on his two-wheeler. The car also rammed into a roadside petty shop, which was closed, before coming to a halt. The front portion of the car was completely damaged.
Bharat was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
According to the police, Surya, the car driver, was returning from a party along with two of his friends who were seated in the rear seat. Police sources suspect that apart from alcohol, the three could have also been under the influence of drugs. They also claimed that they were friends of an actress but struggled with their mobile phone to make a phone call when they were taken to the police station.
The Pondy Bazaar Traffic Investigation police registered a case under IPC section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and section 185 of Motor Vehicles Act (punishment for driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of drugs), and arrested Surya.
