The State government has allocated Rs 553.46 crore for Adyar river restoration. Construction work of the compound wall began last week. “This work is part of river restoration of Adyar river. The wall is to be constructed from Jafferkhanpet to Manapakkam, for up to 500 metres since the width of the river in this stretch is less compared to other parts of the city. It is also the most affected place during Chennai floods in 2015. We don’t want another disaster because of the river, so we are constructing the walls,” said A Palanisamy, Executive Engineer, PWD. The official added that there are several families and small-scale commercial establishments who have constructed houses and other buildings right next to the river. The walls are now being constructed to avoid any flooding in these areas. The work is expected to be completed within a month.
“We are also planning to construct a wall near Burma Colony in Ekkaduthangal. People have been living here for more than 25-30 years. So it is not easy to evict them from that place. We are waiting for an order from the court to remove the encroachments. It would take more than three months to build walls at Adyar river near Burma Colony,” said Palanisamy.
