Brake failure: Driver dies during bid to stop lorry with stone

A 43-year-old driver, who tried to stop his lorry by placing a stone in front of a tyre after noticing a brake failure, died after being pinned to a wall by the vehicle near Chromepet in the wee hours of Monday.

The deceased was identified as Murugan from Tiruvannamalai. On Sunday night, Murugan was heading to Chennai from Vellore in the lorry laden with leather goods. When he was nearing a factory in Chromepet, he noticed that the vehicle’s brakes had failed. Soon, he jumped from the lorry and tried to stop the lorry by placing a stone in front of the tyre.


The police said that he slipped and was crushed between the lorry and a compound wall. Hearing his cries, the neighbours informed the ambulance and the police. The police, who arrived at the spot, confirmed his death and the body was sent to Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.


Man run over by MTC busin Vadapalani


A 52-year-old man riding a two-wheeler was run over by an MTC bus in Vadapalani on Monday afternoon. The deceased, Mahendran of KK Nagar, is self-employed, said the police. The accident took place when he was returning home from Vadapalani on his two-wheeler.


When he tried to overtake an MTC bus (route No 570 plying between CMBT and Kelambakkam) on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai under the Vadapalani flyover, his bike’s handle came in contact with a temple wall on his left and he lost balance. He fell on the road and was run over by the MTC bus. On information, Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation police recovered his body and sent it for autopsy. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
