Kanchi Collector opens Oral Cancer Centre at SRM College
“Cancer in any form is harmful and oral cancer is most vulnerable. So, there is a need to increase awareness among students and teens to prevent it,” said P Ponniah, Collector and district Magistrate of Kancheepuram district, after opening the Oral Cancer Surgical Centre at SRM Kattankulathur Dental College and Hospital located at SRM Institute of Science and Technology recently.

Ponniah said that awareness on tobacco and its impact should be developed. He also stressed on avoiding unhealthy habits and maintaining a proper diet.
“After the Indian Government passed the 2013 Tobacco Control Act, the number of people affected by cancer has reduced. However, this is not enough and more should be done.”
Speaking during the programme, SRMIST founder-chancellor and MP TR Paarivendhar, said, “Unless universities reach out to villages to educate them on healthy living, the anti-tobacco message cannot be passed to the masses.” He added that the Institute presently helps 40 villages.
During the event, a Braille handbook on self-examination for ‘Oral Potentially Malignant Disorder’ was released and the first copy was received by Dipti Bhatia, CEO of National Association for the Blind. Apart from that educational video CDs on anti-tobacco awareness was released by US Medical Oncologist Sambandam.
