When a plea relating to Ayanavaram Velangadu burial ground in Zone-VIII came up for hearing, a division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice M Dhandapani said, “Like in Tirupur, services of NGO can be utilised, as they are fully building, operating and maintaining cremation grounds and similar model may also be explored, for which the standing counsel for the Corporation of Chennai undertakes to come out with suitable response.”
The bench offered the suggestion on recording the submission of the Corporation counsel that 170 cremations are taking place on an average at Ayanavaram Velangadu burial ground. But whenever gasifiers are under maintenance, direction is given to go to the facilities at Arumbakkam, Villivakkam and Otteri to cremate the bodies. In all these three places, burial of bodies is also permitted, the submission said. However, the bench sought a response to its suggestion by November 5, and also suggested to the standing counsel that cremation or burial of the bodies also involves sentiments. Therefore, relatives of the deceased cannot be asked to travel too far for cremation or burial, as it would affect their sentiments.
