Gold worth over Rs 91L seized at airport, two persons arrested

Customs officers seized gold worth Rs 91.5 lakh at Chennai airport and arrested two passengers, including a woman, in this connection.

Based on a specific information, Farjana Abubakkar Siddiqui (27) of Pulianthope and Sathakathulla (47) of Ramanathapuram, who arrived from Malaysia, were intercepted near the exit on Thursday. On personal search, gold hidden inside six bundles of rubbery paste were seized from them.


Farjana had hidden the three bundles in her inner garments, while Sathakathula concealed three bundles in his rectum, said the officers. Further, two gold bits weighing about 40 grams were recovered from his pockets. In all, the officers seized gold weighing about 967 grams worth Rs 38.37 lakh and arrested both of them.


In another case, the Customs officers were checking the passengers who arrived from Dubai. On suspicion, they intercepted Mohamed Sarjoon (30), Adhil Hasim Abdul Nazir (26), Anbalagan Karuppaiah (61) and Shahul Hamid Zackiriya (31), all of them from Ramanathapuram. During personal search, the officers found all of them had concealed gold inside their rectum. The officers seized 1,343 grams of gold worth Rs 53 lakh and all of them were detained for further inquiry.
