The victim, a 30-year-old doctor, has alleged in her complaint that the bridegroom’s family demanded to register a property worth Rs 3.5 crore in their name and Rs 50 lakh in cash. She has stated that though her family agreed to give the dowry, the problem started when the groom’s family started demanding it before the marriage.

Even though her family had already given Rs 10 lakh to the groom’s family to buy a car as gift, they were threatened that the marriage would not take place if they did not give the remaining Rs 40 lakh on time.

“We had already booked the wedding hall, printed invitations and started distributing them,” said the victim in the petition. It is said that the victim at first lodged a complaint at Maraimalai Nagar police station where the groom’s family resides. As there was no action, they later approached Tirumangalam all-women police station and the city police commissionerate to submit a petition.

As per the instructions from senior officers, the Tirumangalam all-women police received their complaint and issued a Community Service Register (CSR) receipt. When contacted, the Tirumangalam police said that they have summoned the groom’s family for interrogation and added that they were seeking time claiming tobe out of station.
