In a few years from now, domestic workers applying for jobs would have a certificate to showcase their skills as the National Domestic Workers’ Movement (NDWM) is now training such workers under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna (PMKVY) to certify and train them to work in other countries.

As part of the Central Government’s Skill India Programme, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is working with NDWM to certify such workers for easy identification and open them to more opportunities.

“The programme will also create social awareness about the significance of their work in the house and how skill enhancement courses can improve their performance. The skill development training is being organised as a four-day programme on a regular basis for all domestic workers who seek employment in other countries and other States,” said Valarmathi, state coordinator, National Domestic Workers’ Movement. Their professional skills in housekeeping, cooking, among others is being sharpened. “Insurance will also be given as part of the training. The NSDC is organising the training for the first time in the State to equip domestic workers,” added Valarmathi.

NDWM, along with the Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and Welfare of Non Resident Tamils, is also working on educating migrant workers in the State on issues faced by them, the role of the State government and other challenges.

The domestic workers are also being made aware of the new Draft Immigration Act 2018, support systems in the form of stakeholders, non-governmental organisations and government bodies available in destination countries.
