According to a Chennai Corporation official, T Nagar is undergoing area-based development (ABD) under the Smart City Mission and the free WiFi scheme would be a part of the ABD. “We have installed free WiFi hotspots along Thiyagaraya Road, which has been converted into pedestrian plaza. In continuation to this, entire T Nagar will come under WiFi connection,” the official said.

Visitors at the pedestrian plaza can use free WiFi connection for 45 minutes every day and they can connect the service by keying in one-time passwords generated while sending connection request. Presently, ACT, a private firm provides free WiFi service at pedestrian plaza. The civic body has selected seven sq .km of T Nagar area for the ABD, with the Panagal Park area is the centre point. The Chennai Corporation had selected T Nagar to implement area-based development that has been mandated during the Smart City Mission. “As per ABD, several projects must be implemented covering a particular area so that the same model can be extended to other parts of the city,” the official added.

When asked whether the civic bodyhas commenced the process, the officialsaid that the project has just been proposed. Once the Chennai Smart City Board approves the project, the civic body would start preparing an estimation and a detailed project report. “We hope the T Nagar project attracts more people to the shopping hub,” he said. The Greater Chennai Corporation had already passed a resolution to convert around eight major parks in the city including Natesan Park, Murasoli Maran Park and Panagal Park into WiFi hotspots. The civic body has also invited bidders to create an optic fibre network connection linking the entire city.
