“PWD officials received the order to strengthen the bunds of the waterbody, increase level the lakebed in order to rejuvenate the same by the district collector. In August, they started to deepen it. The lake is now 40-foot deep,” said Mohan Babu, a resident of Jayalakshmi Nagar.
He added that a drainage canal that from Pallavaram has been channelised to Moovarasampet lake which must be stopped soon. “There was an order from government a few years ago, that the untreated liquid sewage should not be let into the lake,” Mohan Babu added.
Residents also said that at 40-foot, the lake is too deep for a residential area and poses risks. “People walk on the bund and even animals roam in the area. They may slip and fall into the lake. To avoid such mishaps, we want the officials to strengthen the bund and level the lakebed,” said Krishna Kumar B, another resident.
Speaking to DT Next, K Ashokan, Chief Engineer of PWD said, “We are restoring one lake at a time and expect the work to be completed by December.”
