‘Social injustice prevails in leading institutions’

Social injustice prevails in the premier educational institutions of the country, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), and the recent suicide of IIT-M student Fathima Lathief is a vindication of the injustice, pointed out activists at a seminar organised by the National Students Union of India (NSUI)- Tamil Nadu on ‘Decoding Nationalism’ at the Sathyamoorthy Bhavan in the city.

For example, at Anna University, which is right next to IIT-M, we could not find any suicide cases because there is no caste discrimination there. In many colleges, there is reservation for transgenders, whereas in IIT, there is no reservation system for them,” said Ramba, a transgender social activist.

AICC Secretary Christopher Tilak, NSUI National Secretary (Kerala) Abin Varkey, national delegate Iniyan Robert, forum State vice president Avinash, Naresh Kumar and Chennai district president Deepak were also present in the event. IIT-Madras has been rocked by protests by students and political parties after Fathima Lathief, a first year Humanities student, hanged herself. In the backdrop of the protests, the government has transferred the case to the Central Crime Branch Police, who have been holding investigations.

The institution has said that it is extending full cooperation to the police investigation and appealed to all concerned not to initiate or spread any rumours about the institute and let the inquiry to get completed.
