According to senior Corporation officials, the civic body has supplied a truck load of compost produced from its yard to the Aachi Masala Food pvt ltd on its request.
“We are open to supplying this compost to the private companies. We welcome them to make use of our rich organic fertiliser,” the official said.
He added that the Corporation would tie up with start-ups on urban organic farming and farmer producer organisations and farmer producer companies of Tiruvallur district to encourage large scale organic farming using the compost produced. “Our aim is to convert 30,000 acres of farmlands in Tiruvallur district into organic farms,” the official said.
The Corporation has commissioned micro-composting centres at all the 200 wards, generating compost from at least 500 tonnes of vegetable waste generated in the city. The Corporation sells compost at Rs 20 a kg. The initiative is part of its zero waste project.
The civic body plans to stop the dumping of waste at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur by December 2020. The city generates 5,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste a day. Most of its 700 parks have facilities to turn vegetable waste from the neighbourhood into compost.
