Duo behind snatchings held, gold recovered

Police in Tirumullaivoyal arrested two men in connection with a series of chain snatching incidents in their jurisdiction.

The accused were identified as V Veerappan (44) of Karur and S Arunkumar (19) of Adambakkam. Arunkumar was booked under Section 392 of IPC in three cases, while Veerappan was booked under additional Sections 380 and 457 in connection with two cases. The police recovered 32 sovereigns from the duo.

On November 21, two women – P Kalavathi (54) of Cholambedu road and R Alamelu (51) of Thirumullaivasan Nagar – were robbed of five and two sovereign chains respectively in a gap of few hours.

Based on their complaint, Tirumullaivoyal police combed the CCTV footage and found out that the same person had snatched chains from both of them. They identified him as Arunkumar, and secured him.

Investigation revealed that he had already committed similar offences in Tirumullaivoyal jurisdiction. In one of the cases, another person Veerapan was his accomplice. He too was secured. Veerapan was earlier named as an accused in a case of burglary in the locality where he was staying and was absconding, said the police.

Juvenile detained for snatching in Koyambedu

A 14-year-old boy was secured when he tried to flee after snatching a labourer’s phone at Anna fruit market in Koyambedu and handed over to police. The incident happened on Saturday and the juvenile was sent to the government observation home for minors at Kelley’s.
