Malaysian national robbed at knifepoint, two women lose ornaments to snatchers

A Malaysian national was robbed of 11 sovereigns and Rs 20,000 in cash at knifepoint by a three-member gang in Nandanam on Monday morning. In another incident, two women were relieved of their gold chains by snatchers in Velachery and Tiruvottiyur.

The Malaysian national, Lakshmanan (62), was intercepted by a three-member gang in front of Kuber Inn lodge at West CIT Nagar in Nandanam when he was out for a walk with his son Kabilan. They robbed him of 11 sovereigns and Rs 20,000 in cash before fleeing the spot. Based on his complaint, the Saidapet police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the suspects. Police said Lakshmanan had reached Chennai 10 days ago for health reasons.


Meanwhile, a bike-borne snatched the handbag of a 32-year-old woman near Phoenix Market City mall in Velachery on Sunday night. The bag contained 10 sovereigns of jewels and Rs 2,000 cash. The victim, V Sridevi of Velachery, was returning home from office in Nungambakkam on her two-wheeler when the snatching happened. As she had her handbag hanging on the handlebar, it became easy for the snatchers to relieve her of the bag and flee the spot. Based on her complaint, the Guindy police have registered a case. CCTV footage retrieved from both the spots are being combed to identify if the same gang was behind both the incidents.


Similarly, a woman from Tondiarpet was relieved of her four-sovereign chain by an unidentified man in Tiruvottiyur on Monday morning. Devi was walking on Muthu Street when a man who followed her fled the spot after snatching her chain. Based on her complaint, the Old Washermenpet police are searching for the suspect.
