The incident happened when the victim, Dinesh Kumar (32) of Ambal Nagar who works at a software firm in Nandambakkam, visited a travel agency located opposite his office to exchange his money for foreign currency for his upcoming foreign trip.

In his complaint, Dinesh Kumar said that the suspect in 30s introduced himself as a businessman and displayed an ‘unboxed’ wrapper of an iPhone. He reportedly told the victim that he had bought the brand-new mobile phone during his recent visit abroad and offered to sell it for Rs 20,000 as he was in urgent need of money.

Deceived by his words, Dinesh did not think twice before paying the money that the stranger demanded as the wrapper was properly sealed.

After the seller left the spot collecting the money from him, Dinesh Kumar opened the box only to see glass pieces inside.

After realising that he has been cheated, he approached Nandambakkam police station. A case has been registered and a hunt has been launched to trace the suspect.

After CCTV footage were retrieved from the locality and inquiries were held, the police found that the suspect had visited the travel agency earlier posing as a customer. Further investigation is on.
