16 IHM inmates died this year, RTI shows 192 deaths in last nine years
While at least 16 deaths of inmates have been reported so far this year at the Institute of Mental Health, statistics sourced through RTI shows a total of 192 deaths of inmates reported since 2011 till June this year.

While the total deaths in 2016 were 22, there were about 24 deaths reported in 2017 and 16 deaths in 2018. The facility recorded the highest number of inmate deaths in 2011 and 2014 when 30 inmates died.
As per data, total number of inmates admitted as inpatients has declined in past three years as there were about 3,506 inmates admitted in 2016, it reduced to 3,104 in 2017 and further to 3,016 in 2018. Till June this year, 1,649 in-patients were admitted at the hospital.
Of the total patients, there were about 3,558 who were discharged from the hospital in 2016, while there were 3,149 patients and 3,015 patients treated and discharged in 2017 and 2018 respectively. About 1,572 patients were treated and discharged since January to June this year. When contacted, IMH officials said deaths were due to individual ailments and no outbreak was reported in past three years.
