The Nungambakkam police arrested a 55-year-old for kidnapping his friend after the latter allegedly cheated him of Rs 50 lakh.

The police said that the victim A Sakthimurugan of Nolambur, who runs a restaurant and also manages a wedding hall, received about Rs 50 lakh in instalments from Prabakaran over the last 12 months since December last year for a five paise interest.  But, since he refused to pay interest citing loss in the business, Prabakaran enquired with Sakthimurugan’s friends and found out that he has received loans amounting to Rs 2 crore from others as well.

Intending to threaten Sakthimurugan to repay the loan, Prabakaran asked him to come to his photocopy shop on Harrisons Road and kidnapped him in an autorickshaw. While they were on their way to Nolambur, Sakthimurugan raised an alarm after Prabakaran allegedly threatened to kill him if he did not pay up. Passers-by intercepted the autorickshaw and rescued Sakthimurugan, while Prabakaran was handed over to Nungambakkam police.
