According to police sources, the accused, who has been identified as Ram Sharma from Bihar, is missing, while five of his friends, who are working at the construction site where the accused has been working, have been detained.
Police said that a private construction firm, which has been involved in the construction of two 11-storeyed apartments on Chengalpattu-Tiruporur Road, has employed hundreds of workers from northern states and they have been residing in the area for some time. The local residents had already filed a complaint with the Chengalpattu Taluk police that these workers were allegedly creating problems for them, especially in the night hours.
Around 7.30 pm on Tuesday, two schoolgirls were returning home in Perunthandlam village after finishing their tuition classes. Ram Sharma, who followed them, allegedly pulled their hand and tried to misbehave with them. The girls managed to escape from the spot. About 15 minutes later, as another schoolgirl was returning on her bicycle, Ram Sharma allegedly intercepted her and tried to take her inside the bushes. Hearing her cries, the public rushed to her rescue. Ram Sharma then took to his heels and fled, said a police officer.
After the news spread, hundreds of villagers gathered at the construction site. On information, the Chengalpattu DSP, along with personnel from Taluk and Town police stations, arrived at the spot and held peace talks with the villagers and promised action.
