Pay compensation to 72-year-old, SHRC tells govt

The Commission had received a complaint from G Sarojammal, a 72-year-old a resident of Kodungaiyur, stating that she had been assaulted by Banu, who was staying in the first floor of her house on October 18, 2014. She suffered injuries and was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

The petitioner alleged that though filed she a complaint against Banu and had recorded her statements with a police constable from Kodungaiyur police station while she was undergoing a treatment, the police officials did not file an FIR.

She further alleged that her son had approached the Kodungaiyur police station, but special sub-inspector Arumugam refused to take a complaint. Instead, he threatened that he would foist a case and remand him.

When the complaint came up for hearing before the Commission, Arumugam denied all the allegations and submitted that there was a dispute between Sarojammal and the alleged accused Banu. Both of them had given multiple complaints against each other.

However, delivering the order, SHRC member Chittaranjan Mohandoss said, “The commission has held that the police official had violated the human rights of Sarojammal and she is entitled to receive the compensation. The additional chief secretary may take disciplinary action against the then special sub-inspector.”
