The subways — one at Anna Salai-Wallajah road junction and another close to the Tamil Nadu Government Multi Speciality Hospital — were shut down by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Friday.

An official from the Highways Department said that they had handed over the subways to the CMRL)to undertake construction to link it with the concourse level of the Government Estate Metro station. “We expect the work to be completed in three months, after which all the entry and exit points of the subways will available for use,” the official said.

A CMRL official said the work has been undertaken to provide easier connectivity to the Metro station. “Apart from linking the subway with the station, we will also carry out some repairs and renovation,” the official said, adding that they would install signs to help commuters with directions.

The official also noted that the subways are located much closer to the bus stops. “Any person getting down at the bus stop will be able to reach the station using the subways,” the official said, adding that after the subways are linked to the station, it would have nine entry and exit points, including two onWallajah road.
