Stop stone quarrying in Kancheepuram: PIL
The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the State government on a public interest litigation moved by a resident of Pazhaveri village in Kancheepuram district, seeking to stall the ongoing quarrying operations, which has put the locals to grave hardship with heavy duty lorries plying almost 24 hours.

A resident of the village had submitted that on account of on-going quarrying operations, the locals of a nearby locality were put to grave hardship and extreme difficulty. He claimed that constantly heavy duty lorries are plying and are causing damage to the road.
The petitioner’s counsel NGR Prasad also invited the attention of the Court to a series of photographs and prayed for appropriate orders for closure of the stone quarry and other relative appropriate measures.
Special Government Pleader AN Thambidurai, who accepted notice on behalf of the government submitted that after obtaining necessary clearance, including environmental clearance, the quarrying licence in respect of over an extent of 3.66.86 hectares of Pazhaveri village, Uthiramerur Taluk, Kancheepuram district, has been granted in favour of Udhayam Civil Construction Private Limited, represented by the managing director D Karthikeyan, Chrompet and sought time for filing a status report.
Based on this, the division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice R Hemalatha on suo motuimpleading Udhayam Civil Construction Private Limited into the PIL, posted it for further hearing.
