Rather than buying miniatures from outside, Subbulakshmi decided to learn the art of making miniatures from clay. She attended a class on the basics of miniature making. Once she got to know that there is a growing demand for miniature magnets, keychains and other accessories, she started an online venture called Miniature Love.
“There are a few people who make miniatures in India. But they sell the products at a high price. Though there are a lot of artifact enthusiasts in Chennai, they are unable to buy them because of the high price. That’s how I decided to make miniature and sell it commercially,” says the 37-year-old.
Subbulakshmi makes miniatures of various food varieties (idli, dosai, aappam burger, doughnuts, layered cake, French fries, naan, kaju katli, etc) and Harry Potter book series. “I make magnets, keychains, and accessories like pendants, earrings and bracelets. I use polymer clay instead of air-dry clay. The detailing is much more intricate in polymer clay; it has to be baked in the oven,” explains the artist.
Subbulakshmi admits that the planning and making process is tiring and the person needs to take breaks while creating miniatures. “We develop a lot of patience and this is one of the best therapeutic activities. It has a calming effect and relaxes our mind and body,” vouches Subbulakshmi.
Being a multi-tasker, Subbulakshmi says that if a person focuses on what makes him/her happy and decides to go out there and do it, then their quality of life can improve dramatically. “In the current generation, women need to focus more on what makes them happy rather than what makes others happy. Finding quality time to indulge in something that makes one forget their worries is very important to rejuvenate and refresh yourself. Women simply ignore this fact and forget to enjoy life. After a certain age, women totally forget about their passion andinterests,” she says.
