Doctors say that cerebral palsy affects approximately one to three out of every thousand children. However, it is much higher in infants born prematurely or with very low weight. Most of the causes of cerebral palsy do not have specific curative treatments.
At the free consultation camp in the city, a large number of patients with conditions like cerebral palsy, mental retardation, muscular dystrophy, autism, spinal cord injury, paralysis, brain stroke, cerebellar ataxia and other neurological disorders had come for consultation.
“It is generally believed that brain damage during birth is irreversible. However, now with emerging research, it is possible to repair the damaged brain tissue using cell therapy,” said Dr Nandini Gokulachandran, deputy director and regenerative medicine consultant, Neurogen Brain and Spine Institute. “With the use of neuro regenerative rehabilitation therapy, the scope of treatment has improved and the damage to the tissues can be checked at the molecular level and thus the functioning of the nervous system can be improved,” she added.
