The police said that the accused, A Guru alias Gavaskar, was brought to Chennai by his friend Sadam, also an accused from Madurai, a few months ago.

On January 21, the duo followed an elderly woman, Meera Jothi (68) of Brindavan Nagar in Valasaravakkam, on a bike when she was walking to a temple. While Gavaskar rode the bike, Sadam got down, gagged the woman and threatened her before snatching her five sovereign chain and fleeing the spot.

Based on a complaint, the Valasaravakkam police had registered a case and secured Gavaskar with the help of CCTV footage.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old woman was snatched of her seven-sovereign chain in Kumananchavadi on Wednesday morning.

John Bosco Mary of Kumanachavadi, a resident of the neighbourhood, was waiting on Poonamallee High Road for an autorickshaw when a bike-borne duo snatched her seven sovereign chain and fled the spot.
