In an order issued on Thursday, Chennai Collector R Seethalakshmi directed chief education officers of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts to keep the school buildings in their jurisdictions ready for setting up COVID camps.
A Corporation official said the order was issued based on a request from the civic body as per Disaster Management Act 2005. In a communication dated April 28, it had requested the Collector to make arrangements to identity buildings and places that could be used as relief camps and centres.
“The school buildings will be taken over by May 2,” the official added. The Corporation is already converting colleges and convention centres into COVID care and quarantine centres. It is planning to have 22,000 quarantine beds and 22,000 COVID care beds to host asymptomatic patients.
