Dip in mercury brings much-needed relief to city as Amphan causes high tides

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, the sky condition in the city is likely to be cloudy for the next two days and thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places in Tamil Nadu.

“The super cyclonic storm will move Northward and Northeastward towards the West Bengal coast and Bangladesh coast by May 20. There would be thunderstorm activity occurring at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, and as far is Chennai is concerned, it will be cloudy skies for the next two days. The temperatures of maximum and minimum are likely to be around 37 and 29 degrees Celsius respectively,” said S Balachandran, Director of Regional Metrological Department.

On Monday, the maximum temperatures in the city decreased and weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 37.4 degree Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius respectively. The minimum temperature was 29.6 degree Celsius and 29 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam respectively.

Sivagangai recorded 8 cm of rainfall on Monday and Tiruchy 7 cm. Other districts like Namakkal and Ramanathapuram recorded 5 cm of rainfall each.

Meanwhile, the State government on Monday said though Tamil Nadu will not face the impact of cyclone ‘Amphan’, it was constantly monitoring the situation along with the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
