Stray loses sight in attack by mentally unstable man

A mentally unstable man brutally attacked a stray dog with stone in Arumbakkam here following which the animal’s eyes popped out. While the dog’s eyes were surgically removed, animal welfare enthusiasts and police got the man admitted to a home for the mentally challenged.

The incident happened around 2 am on May 25 at MMDA colony and a resident, who regularly feeds the dog, alerted Animal Welfare Board volunteer P Ashwath. The female dog was traced the next morning, but one of the eyes had fallen off and the other eye had also started decaying. The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital and its eyes were removed in a five-hour-long surgical procedure by doctors Chandini and Sridhar.

While the dog recovered after three days, a complaint was lodged at Arumbakkam police station. A case was registered against the person culprit, who was traced to Choolaimedu. After inquiries revealed that he was mentally unstable, Ashwath and police personnel contacted a few NGOs and got him admitted to a home for mentally challenged.

The dog is said to be doing fine and Ashwath said the dog is up for adoption “to those who can really take care of her”.
