MTC shifts to digital cash for tickets

To promote cashless transactions for purchasing tickets, Transport Minister MR Vijayabaskar on Monday announced that Metropolitan Transport Corporation has introduced QR code-based payment facility for tickets in two buses on trial basis.

“MTC has introduced the QR code based payment through various electronic payment facilities including PayTM and Google Pay for purchasing tickets. On trial basis, two MTC buses plying to the Secretariat from TNagar and Thandandan Nagar have started accepting such payments. If successful, it will be extended to promote cashless transactions,” the Minister told reporters at the Secretariat. He also pointed out commuters are making use of monthly passes. “We will also encourage the usage of the monthly bus passes,” he said.

Vijayabaskar said after 68 days, 5,659 buses were operated across the State except in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu with 60 per cent capacity. “The buses could not be operated in Kanniyakumari due to functioning of markets at bus terminus. It will begin on Tuesday,” he said, adding that the private bus operators have decided not to offer services due to less number of passengers. He also said all the passengers are allowed to travel with masks and only after checking their temperature. All preventive measures of COVID-19 are being taken while resuming the operations, the Minister said adding that masks and sanitisers were given to drivers and conductors and buses are disinfected after every trip. To a query on increasing services, he said that the number of buses would be increased if there is a need for it.
