DT Next had reported on June 21 that a parcel agent had broken open a sealed van, offloaded some booked consignment to load his fish consignment less than an hour before the scheduled departure of the train at 8am.

The divisional personnel department had issued an order on June 25, transferring Commercial supervisor V Shivakumar and chief commercial clerks L Rajasekar, A Sangeetha and T Rajesh from the outward parcel office in Chennai Central with immediate effect.

The order also cautioned that supervisory officials would be held responsible for any lapse in enforcing the transfers immediately.

Meanwhile, SRMU, the sole SR union has reportedly condemned the senior divisional commercial manager for suspending the two parcel clerks.

Claiming that the labourers of the agent had broken open the seal when the clerks had gone to attend the door on the other side of the van, Paul Maxwell Johnson, divisional secretary of SRMU, in a representation made to the Divisional Railway Manager on Thursday, said the head of the commercial department had suspended the clerks without giving them a hearing and despite them lodging a complaint with the RPF and informing the commercial department through a control message as per procedure.

Describing the suspension as “highhandedness,” Johnson said that it was not the way to treat employees who gave it their all to keep the system going by putting their lives at risk. It has been learnt that the suspension against the two clerks was revoked following pressure from the union.
