Robber duo hands over mobile phone to police via ‘middleman'

A bike-borne duo, who robbed a phone from a man at knifepoint, handed it over to the police through a 'middleman'.

The incident happened on Wednesday when G Shanmugam (49) of Perambur, a carpenter, was returning home on a two-wheeler from Nungambakkam. He was stopped by the duo on Bill Kington Road and robbed of his mobile phone.

While the duo fled the spot, Shanmugam informed police on patrol. They called Shanmugam's phone 'and asked the duo to return the phone. On the promise that police won't arrest them, the duo agreed to return the phone and asked the victim to come to Perambur bus depot.

While the victim went to the spot with police, the accused, who knew Shanmugam brought police, handed over the phone to a man who was in-charge of cleaning public toilets near the depot and asked him to return the phone to Shanmugam before fleeing the spot.

The Ayanavaram police are combing the CCTV footage to identify the accused.
