Four, including three children, drown in lakes at Chengalpattu

The deceased were identified as Vaadiammal (65) of Senkundram near Malsorapuram, her grandsons Santhosh (12) and Nitish (10), and Mariyammal (10) of Vengadamangalam near Vandalur.

The police said Vaasiammal and her grandsons went to the lake to wash clothes on Friday evening. While Vaadiammal was washing, the children went for fishing in the lake. A few minutes later, Vaadiammal noticed both the children drowning and tried to rescue them. But she also drowned in the effort. The villagers noticed the incident and jumped into the water. A few hours later, they retrieved three bodies.

The Maraimalainagar police team, who visited the spot, sent the bodies for post-mortem examination to Chengalpattu government hospital. The police have registered a case.

In the second incident, 10-year-old girl Mariammal, who went swimming in the Vengadamangalam lake with her friend, drowned. Sources said that the girl’s parents, Kuppan and Gowri, are construction workers. On Friday morning, Mariammal went to the lake for swimming with her friend from the same locality. While they were swimming, Mariammal drowned. Her friend informed the neighbours and Mariammal’s parents. After a search, the villagers retrieved her body. The Thalambur police have registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
