Corpn drive to bring back drop outs to schools, aims 100 per cent literacy in city
In a move to increase students’ strength in schools run by the Greater Chennai Corporation, the civic body instructed them to form teams to identify dropped out students across the city from Wednesday.

According to a Chennai Corporation internal circular to the schools, as many as 281 Corporation schools have the infrastructure to admit more students, only 83,000 students are studying in the schools. “The administration has been asking the headmasters and teachers to take measure to increase the strength,” the circular said.
It also instructed the headmasters to collect details of dropped out students and children who are not enrolled in schools. As per the instruction, the headmaster should identify streets around their respective schools and allocate streets to teachers. The teachers would visit those streets and identify students apart from imploring the parents to admit their children by explaining the facilities provided at the schools and their past achievements. These schools have the infrastructure to admit more than 1 lakh students.
The drive will be conducted till August 31. The circular mentions that the drive intends to attain 100 per cent literacy rate in the city. During the drive, the teachers will submit details of the identified students every day to headmasters. At the same time, the civic body has asked the teachers to follow all safety and precautionary measures prescribed by the government against COVID-19. Meanwhile, around 5,000 students were admitted to Chennai Corporation schools on Monday, when the admissions for government schools commenced.
