4 held for Rs 9 lakh robbery near Gummidipoondi

Nearly a month after a man was robbed of Rs 9 lakh at knifepoint near Gummidipoondi, a special team of police have arrested four suspects and recovered Rs 5.40 lakh in cash and 2.75 sovereigns from them.

The accused were identified as V Jegan (28), P Manikandan (32), N Salim Basha (22) and S Jahadhar Malik (30). Based on a tip-off, inspector Sakthivel and team secured the gang at Kanniyamman Koil junction. Police said Jegan is a history-sheeter with several cases pending against him in Gummidipoondi and other police stations in the district.

One of the accused used to work as a security guard in the factory of victim Lakshmendhra Biswal of Pappankuppam. “He tipped Jegan about Lakshmendhra Biswal withdrawing money to pay his employees and another accused alerted Jegan when the victim was returning home with Rs 9 lakh on August 10,” said police. He was intercepted by Jegan who robbed him of the cash, said police. All four were remanded in judicial custody.
