Chennai’s positivity rate comes down to 7 per cent, Corpn targets 5 per cent
With the city reporting less than 1,000 new cases per day for nearly a week, the Greater Chennai Corporation has managed to maintain the test positivity rate at around 7 per cent.

According to Chennai Corporation data, of the 12,362 persons tested on September 12, only 978 tested positive, which is only 7.90 per cent positivity rate. The civic body tested 12,626 samples and identified 987 positive cases on September 11, which is 7.81 positivity rate. Not too long ago test positivity rate was between 35 per cent to 40 per cent in the city
Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash has been repeatedly expressing that the civic body’s target is to reduce the test positivity rate to 5 per cent.
Meanwhile, 13 of the 15 Chennai city zones have registered single-digit active case rate with Tiruvottiyur and Tondiarpet zones having only 5 per cent active cases, which is the lowest in the city. The zones have 243 and 580 active cases respectively.
In terms of the number of active cases, Manali has the lowest number of active cases with only 133 persons still under treatment. Despite having the highest number of active cases, Kodambakkam (with 1,178 active cases) has 7 per cent active cases. Also, Manali, Royapuram, Anna Nagar and Teynampet zones have 6 per cent active case. However, Alandur and Perungudi have 10 per cent active cases. Overall, 1.33 lakh persons (91 per cent) have recovered from the virus and the city and it has only 10,645 active cases, which is 7 per cent. As many as 2,959 persons had died.
The city has managed to maintain the growth rate of new cases at a negative value. On September 12, the city showed a -0.8 per cent growth rate. Manali has become the best zone in terms of the growth rate of new cases as the zone has shown -8 per cent growth rate. Meanwhile, Adyar, Kodambakkam, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Teynampet and Sholinganallur have positive growth rate with Sholinganallur registering 1.9 per cent growth rate.
