Police said the victim K Anu (17) studied in a private school in Chetpet and wrote the NEET on Sunday in Avadi. Her parents Kamalanathan and Sheeba work as teachers in a private school and Anu wanted to become a doctor from her childhood.
After the examination, Anu told her parents that she did not do the NEET well and was afraid of securing a good rank. Police said Anu, worried about the examination, was dejected for the past three days and was not willing to take food. On Thursday morning, her parents went to school and Anu was left alone in the house. Anu took a kerosene bottle kept at home and immolated herself. On hearing her cries the neighbours rushed to the house and doused the fire. She was then taken to the Chengalpattu GH for treatment.
According to hospital sources, Anu, admitted to the intensive care unit, is out of danger. Police said she had suffered 40 per cent burns but was out of danger since she was young. On hearing about the incident, Minister of Rural Industries TM Anbarasan visited the Chengalpattu GH and advised the doctors to take utmost care.
